Insurance serves as a safety blanket for the major purchases in our lives: house, car, jewelry. What about your hard-earned money? As banks continue to evolve, more products and services are being offered to the consumer beyond that of traditional checking and savings accounts. And just like you review the coverage on your car insurance policy, you should also check that you are receiving maximum coverage through your bank and that your accounts have been structured properly.
The FDIC, an independent agency of the U.S. government, provides a standard deposit insurance amount of $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank. It is possible to qualify for more than $250,000 in coverage if the accounts are deposited in different ownership categories (i.e. single accounts, joint accounts, trust accounts, etc.) If structured properly, a husband and wife can insure up to $1.5M based on the number of deposit accounts held. Those accounts protected include deposits in a checking account, NOW accounts, Savings accounts, Money Market Deposit accounts (MMA) and CDs.
The FDIC does not, however, insure money invested in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, life insurance policies, annuities or municipal securities, even if purchased at an insured bank.
Effective December 31, 2010 through December 31, 2012 all funds in a noninterest-bearing transaction account are insured in full by the FDIC. This temporary, unlimited coverage is in addition to, and separate from, the coverage offered under the FDIC’s general deposit insurance rules.
So, are your deposits covered and how much is your FDIC coverage really worth? For more information and to see how we can structure your account to provide the maximum coverage stop by HomeTown Bank of Friendswood Bay Area, 3211 FM 528, or contact Vice President Chris Salinas at 281.648.9000.
